On January 2nd, Manitobans aged 45 to 74 will be able to have routine breast screenings. The Manitoba government is expanding access to breast cancer screening from the age of 50 to 45. This change will be effective on January 2nd, but for the province, contact will stop there. It plans to lower the age limit to 40 by the end of 2026. For some, this decision is very good news.
Annick:
I think it's a very good start, and I'm looking forward to it being implemented. For example, I was diagnosed at 38, but I was at higher risk than most women, so it's certainly a good step to begin screening at 40, but it won't catch everything. Women will need to push for the care they deserve.

“I would have benefited from screening in my 40s, I believe, had they (radiologists) been able to compare multiple images over time,” Borgfjord said.
‘You have breast cancer’ are four words Borgfjord didn’t expect to hear at 53 years old, especially after a doctor first told her she was too young for a mammogram and breast cancer during an annual check up in her mid-forties.
She found a lump in her left breast one month after receiving “normal” results from her second screening mammogram. “A little birdie inside my head, I’m pretty sure it was my mother, telling me ‘Nope, you’re not going to ignore this (even though I just had the all clear)’” Borgfjord said. “If something feels off, go and get it checked out. Ask for an imaging requisition marked urgent”
Borgfjord said her doctor told her she now has no detectable signs of the disease, but she needs to do a diagnostic mammogram every year…
In the future, Borgfjord wants to see more imaging options for breast cancer, such as ultrasounds or even MRIs, for people, such as herself, who have dense breasts, making it difficult to detect cancer.
